Atmosfear – AN ALTERNATIVE UNIVERSE
The white cube gallery space of 100 Tonson Gallery has been transformed into an alternate universe of Japanese-Thai artist Yuree Kensaku, who took four months to finish up her largest mural on its wall. It can be seen until Nov 27.
Titled “Atmosfear”, this site-specific painting installation is inspired by a special place oozing with malicious energy where the protagonist battles his villain called Makuu Space as appeared in a Japanese superhero TV series, Space Sheriff Gavan.
Kensaku portrays her humorous and imaginative reinterpretations of a collective of emerging worldwide problems in the public consciousness and her own personal struggle through a stream of consciousness-like narrative of her outlandish characters.
They include a little rodeo girl with a crab helmet crashing her whip on a lobster, a macho man springing out of venus’s shell, dangerous cuddly beasts surfing the wave, and a deep fried mermaid reclining comfortably on a can-scattered seaside beach where pastel tsunami is crushing everything in sight.
Kensaku is one of the leading Thai new wave talents known for her lively colourful painting with characters influenced by a wide range of sources from mythologies, popular culture, Japanese manga, to folklores and fairy tales. They are combined with her witty wordplay, resulting in a visual narrative often with unexpectedly serious underlying message.
Her works are exhibited and collected internationally in the past 10 years, including at renowned museums such as Mori Art Museum and Singapore Art Museum. Her latest solo showcase at Art Basel Hong Kong was well received last year.

Tribute – CERAMIC EXHIBITION AT SOMBAT PERMPOON GALLERY
Sombat Permpoon Gallery presents “Tribute”, a ceramic art exhibition by 17 artists from Aug 3 to Oct 2.
The idea behind the exhibition is derived from the gallery’s very own unique role as the venue where artworks by Thai masters are collected and exhibited. Even though some of the masters passed away, their work remains inspirational and have been studied by up-and-coming young artists, creating an invincible connection between the old masters and the next generation of artists.
Curated by Thai-born Australia-based artist Vipoo Srivilasa, the exhibition will display around 20 set of works created under the “Lord Ganesh” theme by 17 Thai artists both emerging and established, including Chira Chirapravati Na Ayudhya, Michael Shaowanasai, Nino Sarabutra, Paiboon Srisutat and Wasinburee Supanichvoraparch.
Using ceramic as the main material, they present a new perception and contemporary view of the elephant-headed deity through their personal experience, interpretation and faith.

Graffiti and Street Art – SEEING THROUGH THE MESS
A group of 34 artists with a talent for graffiti and street art will reinterpret the Thai word rok-rung-rang and present it through their new works at Chomp Cafe, from this Saturday to Oct 2.
The exhibition plays with this word — which can be defined as messy, scattered things, messed up or useless — to get us to realise that what we consider as trash can be changed into something useful.
The concept reflects a truth that even though our daily life doesn’t always go as planned, the clutter in our circumstances often distracts us from truly seeing the bigger picture.
For this exhibition, the graffiti and street artists will use their artistic styles and ideas to show that not all mess is chaotic.
The opening night on Sept 3 will feature music and a party starting at 7pm, followed by a live spray painting show at 8pm.

A Space To Exist – EXPLORING CULTURAL IDENTITY
Multimedia artist Gi-ok Jeon will touch on multicultural identity, motherhood and daily life during “A Space To Exist”, which will be held at Subhashok The Arts Centre from Sept 3 to Oct 2.
This is the first solo exhibition in five years by the Korean native residing in Thailand, who is reputed for combining many different techniques, from embroidery and woodcuts to painting and weaving. She continues to develop her series on her daughter but has changed some emotional perspectives in her latest works, which are divided into three series.
Defined as “Spatiotemporal Movement”, the painting series features Thai patoong (wraparound) fabric on Korean rice paper, as well as Korean fabric (Hanbok). It reflects her attempt to solidify her multi-ethnic identity and her relationship to her current life and place in Thai society.
Symbolising the struggle of cultural identity in the modern age, the “Space Over The Translucency” series consists of 3-D and installation work showcasing the translucent quality in bone china by means of light effects. The series is complemented with the use of Hanbok fabric confined within steel structures.
The “Structural Intermediacy” series will see several vertically long fabrics fill the gallery from floor to ceiling. As the hanging pieces of fabric move in space, the images on the fabric appear to be moving, as well.
