The French Quarter is located on the South-East of Hoan Kiem Lake. As indicated by its name, it embodies the French presence of the colonial time. Indeed, during their presence in Hanoi, French destroyed many Asian buildings to build new one. That’s why they destroyed Bao Thien Pagoda and replaced it by the St. Joseph’s Cathedral for example. This cathedral was built in 1886 and inspired by Notre Dame de Paris. Because of the French influence, we find in this area many buildings with French architecture as well as restaurants and shops.
