1.Weather

Laos has tropical climate with two distinct seasons: rain and dry season. The rainy season lasts from May to November, followed by a dry season from December to April next year, it could well be considered the best time to travel Laos, at this time, the temperature is around 15-30 degrees C.

2. Transportation

Main transportation in Laos is tuk tuk and pick-up car. You must prepare hats, masks, sunglasses, sunscreen shirt (for the summer) and gloves to protect yourself.
You should wear soft and sport shoes as you have to walk pretty much among several nearby attractions.
If you travel in group then you can ask for discount when hiring a tuk tuk or you can rent a bike to go sightseeing. If you travel alone, you should share tuk tuk with other people for saving money.

3. Currency

Laos people are pretty gentle and easy-going; therefore they accept lots of different currency as money Kip (Laos currency), Baht (Thailand), US dollars (US) and Vietnamdong (Vietnam).
You can use USD but to avoid unnecessary incurred when traveling in rural areas, you should exchange your currency into Kip (Laos currency). You can exchange before coming to Laos or exchange at the port of entry or at Laos’s banks, the exchange rate is not much different.

6. NOTES:

  • You cannot kiss the hands, chick or hugging … women in Laos as local people here considered it rude action. Although you want to be friendly, but the action of hugging waist, shoulder or kiss on the chick … especially with the unmarried girl is seen as rude. Even at the massage store, the hotelier will call the police if you have some inappropriate action and immediately you will be fined.
  • If you want to be pictured with a beautiful native girl? That’s perfectly possible. However, when taking photos, you should keep your hands in front of you or behind your back, absolutely not touched the girl cause it will consider violated, if not you will see the “consequences” right after that!
  • Touching or patting one’s head in Laos (especially men) is considered serious offenses and it might lead to unnecessary altercation.
  • If a Laotian do not agree to touch his or her items then you should not plead when he/her do not want you to touch or see it because the item may bring a special spiritual value that they do not want anyone touch it.
  • Laotians are Buddhist worship, when visiting temples; you absolutely must not disorderly, wear indecent clothes dress, teasing or talk louder.
  • When passing through a village and you see the entrance of the village with a cotton rope or a sign hanging across the tree or, a special symbol, then you must understand that the people in this village forbid strangers to the village, mostly because of strange cases or deaths inexplicably that can cause infection, or that day is the abstinence day of the village.
