Northern Thailand offers a plenty of cultural experience and beautiful sightseeing. Although it’s not easy to get away from the crowd of visitors anywhere in Thailand, you’ll find the northern part of the country is the ideal place to relax than the touristy south. The food in the north is also tasty that you will enjoy.

Begin your trip by traveling to the popular town of Chiang Mai. There are overnight trains from Bangkok or you can fly if you have lack of time. Chiang Mai is a wonderful place to spend a few nights. You can set up a trek through your hotel or hostel and spend anywhere from one day to several weeks hiking through and exploring the beautiful countryside.

From there you can get to Chiang Rai and the area known as the Golden Triangle. Many people enjoy visiting Elephant Sanctuaries or experience elephant trekking during their trip to the north. Inquire in advance to make sure you understand the standard of care provided to the elephants at your chosen facility.

From there you can head to Lampang, which has a rich history in trade. There are temples and many sights which worth visiting. Continue traveling south and spend some time in the small city of Sukhothai. This area is about 420 km from Bangkok and offers ruins that are the ideal exploring as well as the ancient city of Sukhothai.

There are many different beaches you should not miss in Southern Thailand. In particular, there is a distinct and different atmosphere and climate between the eastern and western coasts. Consider what your expectations are before planning your trip.

Many people go from Bangkok down to either Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Each island offers its own vibe. It’s possible to visit all three, but if you do not have much time pick one that offers the most of what you’re looking for.

From there you can continue heading from the east coast to the west coast and admire the famous Phuket. Many people enjoy its party atmosphere and base themselves in Phuket with day trips to other beaches. If you want to experience more of Thailand, then travel independently to Koh Phi Phi. From there you can go to Krabi and Railay Beach.

Many people keep traveling from there into Malaysia. If you’re headed back to Bangkok a flight might be your best option. There are a many airports in Southern Thailand that offer affordable flights back to Bangkok. The VIP busses are also available but it can be long and tiring. However, this is your cheapest option.

For people have spent days in Bangkok exploring, there are some great day trips that are worth trying as well. Four popular day tour include Kanchanaburi, Aytthaya, Hua Hin, and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market.

Kanchanaburi is the capital of Kanchanaburi Province. There you will see the Burma Railway (also referred to as the Death Railway) bridge. It was built by Allied POWs during WWII and nowadays there is a memorial and two museums nearby which commemorate those who died during that time. Elsewhere in the Kanchanaburi Province you will have opportunity to explore forests and caves, as well as beautiful waterfalls.

Ayutthaya was an old capital city, but today is a modern Thai city which offers many archeological wonders. Many of the relics are from old temples and palaces. In 1991 it was admitted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains a popular day trip for visitors because of its close proximity to Bangkok.

Hua Hin is a laid back beach town that has a peaceful and friendly cozy atmosphere. It may be not a hot pot for party goers but the small town charm is still what attracts many visitors. It’s a nice place to escape from bustling and chill out in a comfortable setting.

Damnoen Saduak is a well-known tourist destination as a floating market. It’s listed in almost every guidebook and is therefore one of the more popular side tours from Bangkok. It’s a great place to observe the local rowing wooden boats and selling their goods, fruits and vegetables. It’s a colorful and festive environment and is convenient to get to from Bangkok with only 100km. Many people reach it as part of a package tour.
